March 2023 Meeting

In March, the actress and director Jennifer Rigby came to us again – this time to deliver some wonderful monologues and poems in her talk entitled Albert, Worms & ‘George don’t do that’.

Jennifer began by telling us about Joyce Grenfell, who featured in films such as Genevieve and the original St Trinian’s series. She performed Joyce’s monologue ‘Nursery School’ which features the classic line “George don’t do that.” Joyce was the earliest inspiration for the great Victoria Wood and Jennifer next treated us to Victoria’s hilarious ‘The Haworth Parsonage Tour Guide’.

Jennifer then read the poem ‘Warning (When I am an old woman I shall wear purple)’ by Jenny Joseph, followed by ‘They Should Have Asked My Husband’ by the very talented Pam Ayres. Her pièce de résistance however, was her rendition (complete with multiple hats as props) of ‘The Lion and Albert’ originally performed by Stanley Holloway and well worth listening to on YouTube – where you will also find the other titles mentioned, together with monologues by the wonderful Patricia Routledge of Hyacinth Bucket fame.

The monthly competition was for ‘Something beginning with M’ and featured a wide array of objects ranging from music boxes, magnifying glasses, several mice and even a tube of mints! However, the winner was Jennifer Williams with her interesting display of medals, some dating from the First World War.

Our next meeting takes place on Easter Monday 10 April, 7.30pm in Salwarpe village hall, when subscriptions are due and new members will be most welcome.
